3/12 - 3/15

Spring Break - April 1-5
April 25th - Rock Eagle Field Trip
Last Day of Class - May 15th

Farm Fusion Journal Choose One:

  • Today's lesson will be on LETTER WRITING.  Remember how we've been talking about using formal language when writing an essay (and not using "chill" language like you use when talking to friends)?  Well, we're going to be using more FORMAL language to write a business style letter.  How on earth could Ms. Holly tie in letter writing to the farm?  Well, let me tell you.... The animals around here sometimes have things to complain about: all the rain, the cold, not the right grain for their picky tastes... the list goes on!  Choose an animal that could have a complaint.  Then, write a FORMAL business letter from the animal to Freebird Farm.
  • You can type it or write it by hand.  In a business letter, you do not indent.  Keep everything on the left side (don't center things in the middle of the paper).  Be sure to make it formal and "business-like"!

    • In order to format your letter correctly, here are a few examples:

Language Arts

  • We will not begin the next book for a few weeks!  (Yes... I have a reason behind that!)  I want you to read the 5 short Chinese poems on this page.  You'll see that  four of them were written in the Tang Dynasty(唐朝 - Táng cháo). The Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) is largely considered the golden age of Chinese poetry.  We are going to be learning about poetry as we study some of the countries in Asia!
  • Study all of your grammar cards this week.   We will be moving on to a new part of speech on Monday.
  • Geography/Writing Combo-- Click here to read this page on families in China.  Instead of answering the two questions at the bottom of the page, I'd like you to put the answers in the form of a paragraph.

Geography
  • In class, you were given a booklet about China.  Read through the booklet (color it if you'd like... but you don't have to!)
  • We talked about how to read the SCALE of a map.  At home, I'd like you to complete the Reading a Map page on Asia.  (It is the page with map A and map B.)  Get a parent's help if you need it!  Remember, in class we used a slip of paper to mark the measurement from the map's scale.  Use this trick to do the questions on the page.

FIELD GUIDE
  • Because we are taking a little break from our reading books, I'd like you to learn about different plants and animals that can be found in ASIA!  Add these to your field guide.  We will share them in class!

Who Was Earnest Shackleton?

  • Due on MONDAY:
    • Finish your story board project onErnest Shackleton!  In your folder, you have a long, skinny packet of paper.  You will be using it to create a story of either Ernest Shackleton's life OR Earnest Shackleton's expedition on the Endurance.  You'll need to learn about your subject first.  Then, jot down the things that you'd like to add to your story.  Next, draw a picture for each part of your story.  You have plenty of paper, so you can make more than one picture for each part if you'd like!  You can have a sentence or so above or underneath each picture.  Please do your best on these!  We will be creating a moving picture project in class, and I'd love these to be great!
    • Tip-- Don't use markers.  Use colored pencils or crayons.
    • Tip-- Please color these pictures to help them stand out!
    • Tip-- Write neatly and large enough to see it.
    • Turn in your Who is Ernest Shackleton book on Monday if you forgot it!
    • PLEASE don't forget to bring these projects on MONDAY!
