Grammar 
    • We talked about root words and suffixes in class.  We'll be working on prefixes and suffixes at home this week.  Talk about root words, suffixes, and prefixes whenever they pop up in your at-home spelling and language arts lessons!
      • Remember, when you add a suffix to a word that ends in a consonant and has a short vowel sound, you must double the final consonant.  (Example - hop + ing = hopping)
      • If you have a y at the end of a root word and the letter before it is a consonant, you may need to change the y to an i before adding the suffix that begins with a vowel.  (Examples- scary + er = scarier)  This isn't needed for suffixes that begin with an i... just keep the y!
      • If you have a root word that ends with a silent e and has a long vowel sound in the word, you must drop the e when you add a suffix that begins with a vowel (example - hope + ing = hoping)
      • Sometimes, the -ed suffix can sound like the letter T!  If your child struggles with spelling words like these, this game may help!

      • Show your parents your landforms flip book from class.

          Handwriting 
          • Parents, watch your child write at least one assignment this week.  Watch to see if they are forming the letters correctly, not just if they look correct in the end.  If they are using too many strokes, starting the letter at the bottom, etc, they may have a correct 'looking' letter, but they will be creating habits that will slow them down later on!

            Journal-
            • This is your very last journal entry!  I'm going to let you write about absolutely ANYTHING you'd like!  It can be fiction or non-fiction.  
              • You must show me your best handwriting, capitalization, and punctuation.  Try to write great sentences!  If you can, write in paragraph form!
