For 10/30-11/2

Monday FreeRangers

Tuition due on 11/5.

I sent out an email last week with the BrainPOP username and password.  If you didn't receive the email, please let me know! I may have the wrong email address and I need to correct it to make sure you get future emails.  Thanks!

This school year has been created around books of nature/geography/survival.  At the end of the year, I have planned for a big field trip to Rock Eagle 4H Center in Eatonton, GA.  I will be choosing classes and creating our program around topics that we will have learned this school year.  There will be a one day field trip for our Monday classes, and our Wednesday classes will have an option to stay overnight.  Dates for the trip are April 25th (Monday Classes) and 25th-26th (Wednesday Classes).  If you have students in both classes, we can talk about option to help make it work for your family!

Language Arts
  • You did a great job with the state of being verbs.  Keep practicing your grammar cards (often!), and work on memorizing the definitions and the state of being verb list.
  • Read chapters 9-13 in Lost!
  • Here is a link to the new vocabulary list.  We do activities and review of these words in class, but it really only works if the kids study them at home during the week.
  • No need to worry about your field guides this week.  I took them up for the first "Field Guide Check"!  (You'll get them back next week.)
  • I love your book report/review cards!!!  Keep up the amazing work!
Diving Deeper (optional)
  • How hard was it to build the Panama Canal?  With a parent's' help, research it and tell us what you learned!
  • In our book, Carter uses his trash bag for many things.  One of the things that he makes is a water filter.    With a parent's help, research how to make a water filter at home.  Bring it to class to show the class, and be sure to be ready to tell how it works!

Geography
  • While watching this video, think about what the different countries in Central America look like.  If you don't want to watch the video, check out books or other sources!
    • Think about what it looks like there.  Are their forests? Deserts? Mountains? What is there?)  Choose a country and draw/paint/or create an image of what it looks like there.  You can be creative!  If you don't want to draw/paint/etc., then you can describe it with words.
  • Practice pointing out the different countries in Central America.  You can go back and look at the videos from previous weeks if it helps!

Science
  • Unfortunately, only two students completed their science notebook  assignment last week.  Before we move on, we need to full understand the six kingdoms.  Scroll down to last week's assignments and follow the directions to add information to the Six Kingdoms page.
  • In class, you learned that viruses aren't actually classified as living things!  Weird!  Click here to go to the BrainPOP page on Viruses.  Watch, click, read, play, and learn!

Next week, if you have a Jack-o-Lantern that you are finished with, bring it and "chuck it" to the pigs!  They'd love the treat!

Farm Fusion Journal Assignment  Choices
  • In class, we talked about facts and opinions.  Tell the class about your favorite farm animal.  Why do you like them?  Explain. This will be full of opinions, and we will talk as a class about the fact and opinion sentences that you write.

*If you need a reminder of what to add to your card, there is a link at the top of this page!

Diving Deeper-  The main character in our story's name is Carter.  Think about what YOU would do if you were Carter!  Would you have done things differently?  Do you have a similar personality to Carter, or are you very different?  Write about it and bring it in to share with the class!

     Grammar

Farm Fusion Journal Assignment  Choices
  • Here are your writing choices for next week:
    • In class, we talked about ways that cows' hooves are trimmed now (with a cow tipper... which keeps the cow calm and is a lot faster & safer for the person!) versus how they trimmed in the past, or how you have to trim one by hand.  How do you think cows' hooves will be trimmed far in the future?!  Get creative and see what you can come up with!

Language Arts
  • Read chapters 15-22 in Northern Lights.
  • When you learn about a plant, animal, place/landform, add it to your (field guide.
  • Here are some ideas of things you can add this week. Remember, don't just make a list.... use this to jot down research, draw pictures, print and paste info/pictures, etc!

    • Canada Provinces
    • Husky Dogs / Dog Sledding
    • Science Behind the Northern Lights
    • Capilano Suspension Bridge
    • Douglas Fir
    • Maple Syrup

  • Complete the vocabulary sheet for chapters 15-18 only.  Use this as practice looking up words in the dictionary!  (Don't worry about writing all of the words in the definition!  Find the meaning that our author is using in the book and just write it in your own words.)
    • Here is a link for a Quizlet set based on these words.  Use the flashcards or games to help practice the vocabulary words!
  • Diving Deeper Journal Entry - Research the history of dogsledding.  Write about what you learn and share them with the class!

     Grammar
  • Keep practicing pointing out different types of nouns at home.  Parents, keep working on common and proper nouns.  Point them out when you can!
  • You now have 4 grammar cards.  Look through and study them at home.  We'll be adding more and more throughout the year... if you study a little bit each week it will work!
  • We'll be learning the four types of verbs, but at first we will focus on ACTION VERBS.
  • Play this verb game!  Click on the balloons with the action verb inside.

Geography
Each student was given a different country in North America.  They will be working on a poster that tells about their country!  Make sure the title is large and easy to read.  You don't have to use the pages that I send home.  Check out books, watch videos, use websites... just learn and share!  :-)  I'm encouraging neatness and trying to help each child get used to turning in his or her best work!  Please bring these to class on 10/15!

The poster can include:
  • Name of country
  • location
  • flag
  • type of government / leaders
  • special holidays
  • foods & customs
  • languages
  • history

Science
  • In science, we have been talking about Classification on Living Things.  The levels of classification are in the picture shown.  Mnemonics are used to help us remember things like this!  They use the first letter of each item to help us remember them, in order.  Here are some examples of mnemonics to help us remember the levels of classification:
    • Dear King Phillip Came Over For Good Spaghetti
    • Do Kids Play Chess On Fine Glass Surfaces?
    • Definitely Keep Ponds Clean Or Frogs Get Sick!
  • You have a sheet in your yellow folder that has the different levels of classification on it.  In the center of the triangle, either write one of these Mnemonics (down the page) or come up with your own!  Don't cut anything... Just bring it to class and we will add it to your Interactive Science Notebooks!
  • Please look over your imaginary animal writing assignment.  Add a name, if needed.  Also, create more details if you need to.  Remember, we need to know what it looks like, what type of skin/fur/feathers it has, where it lives, what it eats.... everything!  We will be headed back into our imaginary world after the break, and we will be making our very own classification system for these creatures!

Farm Fusion Journal Assignment  Choices
  • This week is up to you!  Write ANY story you'd like!  BUT.... remember how we talked about being very descriptive when you write (so that people will be able to picture what you are talking about)?  Keep that in mind, and try to vividly describe the things that are in your story!
