Due by April 8th

April 25th - Rock Eagle Field Trip
Last Day of Class - May 15th

Tuition Due by class on April 8th

PARENTS-- If your child is attending the field trip, I need you to send me an email or text ASAP and let me know what dietary restrictions the cafeteria needs to prepare for.  They try to accommodate if at all possible, but I have to let them know now!   Thank you!

Language Arts

  • The class ROCKED the preposition lessons!
  • Now, let's take a look at the four types of sentences:
    • Questions (Interrogative)
    • Commands (Imperative)
    • Statements (Declarative)
    • Exclamations (Exclamatory)
  • Watch the video below.  Print and complete this sheet and put it in your folder.

Swiss Family Robinson
  • You have a new book AND a new notebook!  Look through the questions for chapters 1-4 before you begin reading.
  • In other versions of this story, it says that the Robinsons leave Switzerland and are traveling to Australia.  They are shipwrecked in Southeast Asia.  Check out a map and see if you can trace a path that their ship may have taken.
  • Next, read chapters 1-4.  I want you to do your very best to answer the questions in your packet!
  • If you come upon a word that you don't know, add it to the "Tricky Words" page.  Look up the definition and bring these to class.  We will add them to our Word Wall!
  • Add any cool plants, animals, & places to your Field Guide! (Just a few ideas for you for chapters 1-4 : monkeys, calabash trees, penguins, jackals.)

Reader's Journal (choose ONE)
  • The Robinsons try many new and different foods to survive on the island.  Using information from the first four chapters, create an imaginary menu of what their meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) could have been like.
  • The Robinsons built a treehouse!  Write a paragraph that explains he steps in building the treehouse or details that the Robinsons included in their treehouse.  Use transition words to help your paragraph to flow!

Geography
  • We talked about The Ring of Fire in class.  Check out this really great video at National Geographic explaining The Ring of Fire and Earth's volcanoes!
  • We are going to begin our unit on Australia!  I want you to make a list of things that you already know about Australia AND a list of things that you want to learn about Australia.  Put these in your folder and we will discuss them when we return!

Science
  • We are learning about invertebrates.  Check out the chart in your science notebook.  Do you remember talking about the 6 groups of invertebrates that we mentioned in class?  Look at the chart and remind yourself of our lesson.
  • Next, click here and read.
    • Answer the following questions in your science notebook:
      • Arthropods have hard outer shells made of chitin.  What are these outer shells called?  Define the word in your notebook (in complete sentences).
      • What are the 4 groups of arthropods?
    • Next, click here and read.  Answer the following in your science notebook (in complete sentences):
      • What is so special about the legs of insects?
      • What is the difference between complete and gradual metamorphosis?
  • Read about the different parts of an insect's body under the flaps in your science notebook.

Spring Break - April 1-5
April 25th - Rock Eagle Field Trip
Last Day of Class - May 15th

Farm Fusion Journal Choose One:

  • If the animals on the farm could plan an amazing spring break get-away, where would they go?  What would they do?  Write a short story about their dream vacation!

  • Language Arts

    • You learned about prepositions in class.  Study your preposition grammar card.  Also, practice the preposition song!  Here is a video to help you remember how it goes:

    Geography

    • We've learned how to use a map key, grid points, and map scales.  If you didn't complete the second map page, work on it at home!
    • Watch this cool video filmed in Thailand!

    • Choose ANY country that is in ASIA.  Research that country.  What is it like to live there?  What are the customs like?  What is the land and weather like there?
    • Learn about this country and choose one of the following:
      • Create a poster to display what you learned about your country.  Be ready to present it to the class!
      • Write about your country in your Reader's Journal.  (Try your best to create paragraphs!)
      • Bring in something that represents this country (food, clothing, doll, game, etc) and be ready to talk about it to the class!
    • **We aren't starting our new reading book until next week... so you have extra time for this assignment!**

    Science
    • In class, we learned how animals are classified as having asymmetry, bilateral symmetry, or radial symmetry.  Read through the information under the flaps in your science notebook.  You can also click here to read more about the different animals with each type of symmetry.
    • OPTIONAL-- Parents, if you'd like to review identifying lines of symmetry, the kids have a worksheet in their folder that you can use.

    • In class, we talked about how the animal kingdom is divided into two main categories: VERTEBRATES and INVERTEBRATES.  We'll begin our study of the animal kingdom by studying invertebrates.  Click here to read a little about invertebrates.  On the left side of the page are links to different "Animal Profiles".  Click on them to learn more about each one!

    3/12 - 3/15

    Spring Break - April 1-5
April 25th - Rock Eagle Field Trip
Last Day of Class - May 15th

    Farm Fusion Journal Choose One:

    • Today's lesson will be on LETTER WRITING.  Remember how we've been talking about using formal language when writing an essay (and not using "chill" language like you use when talking to friends)?  Well, we're going to be using more FORMAL language to write a business style letter.  How on earth could Ms. Holly tie in letter writing to the farm?  Well, let me tell you.... The animals around here sometimes have things to complain about: all the rain, the cold, not the right grain for their picky tastes... the list goes on!  Choose an animal that could have a complaint.  Then, write a FORMAL business letter from the animal to Freebird Farm.
    • You can type it or write it by hand.  In a business letter, you do not indent.  Keep everything on the left side (don't center things in the middle of the paper).  Be sure to make it formal and "business-like"!

      • In order to format your letter correctly, here are a few examples:

    Language Arts

    • We will not begin the next book for a few weeks!  (Yes... I have a reason behind that!)  I want you to read the 5 short Chinese poems on this page.  You'll see that  four of them were written in the Tang Dynasty(唐朝 - Táng cháo). The Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) is largely considered the golden age of Chinese poetry.  We are going to be learning about poetry as we study some of the countries in Asia!
    • Study all of your grammar cards this week.   We will be moving on to a new part of speech on Monday.
    • Geography/Writing Combo-- Click here to read this page on families in China.  Instead of answering the two questions at the bottom of the page, I'd like you to put the answers in the form of a paragraph.

    Geography
    • In class, you were given a booklet about China.  Read through the booklet (color it if you'd like... but you don't have to!)
    • We talked about how to read the SCALE of a map.  At home, I'd like you to complete the Reading a Map page on Asia.  (It is the page with map A and map B.)  Get a parent's help if you need it!  Remember, in class we used a slip of paper to mark the measurement from the map's scale.  Use this trick to do the questions on the page.

    FIELD GUIDE
    • Because we are taking a little break from our reading books, I'd like you to learn about different plants and animals that can be found in ASIA!  Add these to your field guide.  We will share them in class!

    Who Was Earnest Shackleton?

    • Due on MONDAY:
      • Finish your story board project onErnest Shackleton!  In your folder, you have a long, skinny packet of paper.  You will be using it to create a story of either Ernest Shackleton's life OR Earnest Shackleton's expedition on the Endurance.  You'll need to learn about your subject first.  Then, jot down the things that you'd like to add to your story.  Next, draw a picture for each part of your story.  You have plenty of paper, so you can make more than one picture for each part if you'd like!  You can have a sentence or so above or underneath each picture.  Please do your best on these!  We will be creating a moving picture project in class, and I'd love these to be great!
      • Tip-- Don't use markers.  Use colored pencils or crayons.
      • Tip-- Please color these pictures to help them stand out!
      • Tip-- Write neatly and large enough to see it.
      • Turn in your Who is Ernest Shackleton book on Monday if you forgot it!
      • PLEASE don't forget to bring these projects on MONDAY!
